Choosing you Viper Steering Blade

Color: Viper offers an extraordinary range of colors and designs ranging from 7-15 options depending on what blade you are ordering. Blade designs change annually so keep checking back to see what the latest designs are.

Shaft Type: Steering blades come in all carbon, or with bamboo shafts. Both are extremely light but the carbon shaft is lighter at 17 ounces, compared to the 19 ounce bamboo shaft. Both versions are strong and stiff.

Blade Angle and Size: The steering blade comes in 2 sizes, a larger blade with a 9.5 inch width and 21.25 inch height, and the smaller blade with a 9 inch width and a 22.75 inch height. The larger blade is more common with the smaller blade being preferred for smaller water or steersman who like a smaller blade to paddle steer with. Both blade sizes have the same angle of 4°.

Paddle Size: The size of the paddle is the overall length of the blade measured from the very bottom of the blade to the top of the t grip. To get a general idea of what size you need click on the Size Guide at the top of the page. For a blade being used in a traditional OC6 order near the upper end. If you are purchasing a paddle for an OC1, OC2, or an unlimited then order near the lower end. This is a general guideline.
